Two scourges that caused long delays to last year’s Daytona 500 -- a wet track and the highly combustible jet fuel used to dry it -- could become non-factors for this season’s Sprint Cup season opener.NASCAR will unveil a new drying system at next month’s Speedweeks that is expected to improve efficiency by 80%, drying Daytona International Speedway in 30 minutes instead of two and a half hours.”That’s the goal, and we’re real close,” chairman Brian France said Tuesday on the Sprint Media Tour. ”We also are going to do it in a much more green carbon emission friendly way. We’re going to be able to dry Martinsville (Speedway, the circuit’s shortest track) in 15 minutes. It’s going to be a spectacular thing, and all auto racing will benefit from this.”NASCAR president Mike Helton said the new system will be a series of pipes attached to the rear of a pickup truck that will use compressed air and heat to remove water, eschewing the jet dryer approach that depended on blowing hot air on the asphalt.”We used to dry tracks off with just a fleet of vehicles going around the racetrack, or dragging tires behind pickup tricks, and then someone came along with the jet dryer that expedited it quite a bit and served its purpose for a long period of time,” Helton said. ”But in today’s world with the expectations of getting the show done, there was a high priority placed by Brian and the rest of us to come up with a way that we could expedite that, and this seems to have quite a bit of validity to it.”NASCAR vice president of operations Steve O’Donnell couldn’t provide a full description of the new system because of pending patents but said it would resemble ”a wave of water coming off the track.” O’Donnell said two dozen new dryers will be used in conjunction with existing equipment at Daytona.Last year’s Daytona 500 was the first in the 53-year history of the event to be delayed by rain and started 30 hours late on Monday night. It was stopped for more than two hours when Juan Pablo Montoya’s Chevrolet collided with a jet dryer under caution, sparking a 20-foot wall of flames.

Brazilian city declares emergency over dengue
Municipal authorities in Campo Grande, the capital of the southwestern Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, on Monday declared a health emergency due to a serious outbreak of dengue fever.
The decree, signed by Mayor Alcides Bernal, says that the city needs to take "urgent" measures to control the epid <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> emic.
Of the 9,320 cases verified during the first weeks of January, 600 have come in the last three days, according to figures compiled by the municipal health department
In the state of Parana, which borders on Mato Grosso do Sul, five municipalities have declared an emergency with 1,269 confirmed dengue cases.
Bernal, in remarks to the state-run Agencia Brasil news service, said that "the numbers show that this epidemic is the largest <a href={url}>{keyword}</a>" ever experienced in Campo Grande, a city of about 786,000 people.
The emergency decree allows the hiring of doctors without the need for bidding and it also facilitates the procedures for buying medical equipment, among other <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> things.
Simultaneously, authorities have increased the hours of operation for mobile clinics.
The mayor added that city hall intends to increase the number of vehicles used to fumigate for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the disease. EFE
